Israel claims control of strategic Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon The Israeli military said it has taken control of Beaufort Castle, a strategic hilltop fortress in southern Lebanon that has featured in several major confrontations since Israel’s 1982 invasion of the country. According to the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation, military sources said efforts are now focused on consolidating control over Beaufort Castle and the surrounding Saluki River area. The report said “control over these sites was achieved after clashes and heavy fire cover from the ground and air”, stressing the strategic importance of the positions in Israel’s expanding operations in southern Lebanon.
