Netanyahu appoints army general as new Mossad chief Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally appointed Major General Roman Gofman as the next head of the Mossad, the country’s foreign intelligence agency. The appointment was approved on Sunday, with Gofman set to take over on June 2, 2026, when current director David Barnea completes his five-year term. Gofman, an army officer without a background in intelligence, built his career in Israel’s armoured corps after immigrating from Belarus as a teenager.
